Mutton Busting

Mutton Bustin' – A Folsom Pro Rodeo Tradition It's a few seconds of sheer childhood glee, apprehension and exhilaration that ultimately end with a mouth full of dirt as five and six-year-old children take their moment in the spotlight in the mutton busting competition held nightly at the Folsom Pro Rodeo. Each evening rodeo action pauses briefly while 12 pre-registered young cowboys and cowgirls get decked out in their best western outfits, grab a helmet and a fistful of wool and attempt to ride - but more like hang on for dear life to- a full-grown sheep. The crowd wildly cheers for each contestant as the sheep bolts (or sometimes simply walks) from the chute, runs into the arena, and at some point, loses its rider. The ride usually lasts only several seconds, but in a child's mind, it is a ride that will last a lifetime. Mutton Busting signups begin in early May.
